Ürümqi has seen significant economic development since the 1990s and currently serves as a regional transport node and a cultural, political and commercial center. Ürümqi is one of the top 500 cities in the world by scientific research output, as tracked by the Nature Index.

With a population of 3.5 million, it's surrounded my mountains and desert with no city its size in 1,800 km (1,100 miles). Forty-three ethnic groups, including the Uygur, Kazak, Hui, and Han, live in and around this city. Numerous ethnicities with different customs constitute a colorful Urumqi.
Xinjiang Regional Museum, a famous landmark in Urumqi, is a good place to catch a glimpse of the history and diverse ethnic cultures of Xinjiang. Hundreds of thousands of cultural relics are exhibited to reproduce the brilliant Xinjiang of different dynasties and in different fields.
Ürümqi is situated at the heart of Uyghur Region of Xinjiang, in northwestern China. The city’s name in local language means “fine pasture”. It is located in a fertile belt of oases along the northern slope of the eastern Tien Shan range.
