O filme é baseado no livro A Quinta Onda, primeiro título de uma trilogia, escrita por Rick Yancey. A roteirista Susannah Grant ( Burlesque, O Solista) adapta o livro para o cinema. A direção é de J Blakeson, o mesmo roteirista de O Abismo do Medo 2 (2009). O ator Tobey Maguire assina a produção.
