The first conference was held in Garmisch, Germany, in 1968, and this was followed by a second conference in Rome in 1969. The Garmisch conference was attended by over 50 people from 11 countries.

Abstract. We present a personal perspective of the Art of Programming. We start with its state around 1960 and follow its development to the present day. The term Software Engineering became known after a conference in 1968, when the difficulties and pitfalls of designing complex systems were frankly discussed.

1 de jul. de 2008 · In 1968 and 1969, the well-known NATO conferences on software engineering openly and frankly discussed, for the first time in a public forum, programmers' difficulties, although some publications, notably Dijkstra's, dealt with these issues very explicitly in the early 1960s [2].
