Roman beginnings. The Romans invaded Britain in AD43 and landed in Kent. Pursuing the ancient Britons along the banks of the Thames, they came to the first fordable point of the river. On a site nearby, they built a garrison, and Londinium was born. Later, they erected the first bridge over the Thames.
