Paul V (born Sept. 17, 1552, Rome—died Jan. 28, 1621, Rome) was an Italian pope from 1605 to 1621. A distinguished canon lawyer, he was papal envoy to Spain for Pope Clement VIII, who made him cardinal in 1596.

Pope Paul V (Latin: Paulus V; Italian: Paolo V) (17 September 1550 – 28 January 1621), born Camillo Borghese, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 16 May 1605 to his death, in January 1621.
When Camillo Borghese was elected pope of the Roman Catholic church in 1605 he took the name Paul V. He is remembered for his battles with the civil authorities of Venice as well as for his patronage of the arts.
