  1. This is a list of local authority districts within Greater London, including 32 London boroughs and the City of London. The London boroughs were all created on 1 April 1965. Upon creation, twelve were designated Inner London boroughs and the remaining twenty were designated Outer London boroughs.

  2. It is divided into the City of London and 32 London boroughs, the result of amalgamation of earlier units of administration that can be traced back to ancient parishes. Each borough is made up of many smaller areas that are variously called districts, neighbourhoods, suburbs, towns or villages.

    Creation

    From the mid-1930s, the Greater London area comprised four types of local government authorities. There were county boroughs, municipal boroughs, urban districts and metropolitan boroughs.     Between 1965 and 1986 the boroughs were part of a two-tier system of government and shared power with the Greater London Council (GLC).
