On 18 April 1599, 33-year-old Isabella married Albert in Valencia. They had three children who died at a very young age, in 1605, 1607, and 1609. [citation needed] Archdukes Albert and Isabella Clara by Otto van Veen Habsburg Netherlands. Beginning in 1601, the Archduke and Archduchess ruled the Spanish Netherlands together.

In 1601, Isabella and Albert assumed rule of the Spanish Netherlands. The country had endured some four decades of religious and economic war and all sides longed for peace.
