Em 1526, após 150 anos de conflito no sul, os turcos finalmente lograram conquistar a Hungria, com exceção do norte e da Transilvânia, transformada porém em satélite do Império Otomano. A expansão turca para o norte continuou até 1556. Com a queda de Buda para os otomanos, a Hungria viu-se dividida em três partes.
