21 de nov. de 2019 · In the case of poison frogs, toxicity may correlate with the conspicuousness of skin color patterns (Maan & Cummings, 2011), which therefore act as aposematic signals for predators (Hegna et al., 2013). However, coloration patterns also mediate assortative mating in poison frogs (Crothers & Cummings, 2013; Maan & Cummings, 2009).

The most toxic of poison dart frog species is Phyllobates terribilis. It is believed that dart frogs do not synthesize their poisons, but sequester the chemicals from arthropod prey items, such as ants, centipedes and mites – the diet-toxicity hypothesis.
Amphibians—frogs, newts, toads, and salamanders—are equipped with defense mechanisms deserving of much caution. Some of the potent toxins they produce include digoxin, tryptamines, and tetrodotoxin.
Each golden poison dart frog (Phyllobates terribilis), likely the most toxic frog species and among the most toxic animals in existence, possesses enough toxin to kill 10–12 people. Animals may be both poisonous and venomous.
