O caso Nominativo é o sujeito de uma frase. Ele também está associado à alguns verbos, como "sein" ou "werden" como complemento: Das Essen schmeckt gut. Ich bin ein junger Mensch. Er wird eines Tages ein berühmter Künstlerwerden.
O genitivo é o caso possessivo. A pergunta teste para identificar um genitvo é feita pela palavra "wessen". Alguns verbos e preposições regem o modo genitivo: Die Tasche des Bruders. (Wessen Tasche ist das?)
O dativo é usado para marcar o objeto indireto de um verbo. A pergunta teste para o objeto dativo é usada pela palavra "wem". O dativo também é regido por determinadas preposições: Ich gebe dem Mannmeine Telefonnummer. (Wem gebe ich meine Telefonnummer? Dem Mann.)
O acusativo é usado para marcar o objeto direto do verbo. Se você fizer uma pergunta usando "wen" ou "was" e a resposta não for um nominativo, você identificou o objeto acusativo.
