Coptic was an official language in Egypt until around the 13th Century AD, when it was replaced by Arabic. Nowadays Coptic Christians all speak Arabic as their every day language, but use Coptic in their religious ceremonies.
Coptic (Bohairic Coptic: ϯⲙⲉⲧⲣⲉⲙⲛ̀ⲭⲏⲙⲓ, Timetremǹkhēmi) is a group of closely related Egyptian dialects, representing the most recent developments of the Egyptian language, and historically spoken by the Copts, starting from the third century AD in Roman Egypt.

Linguistics. Coptic is the latest phase of the ancient Egyptian language, notable for its use of a largely Greek-derived alphabet, its extensive incorporation of Greek vocabulary, and its strong association with Christianity in Egypt.
Coptic literature, which survives in a number of dialects, comprises both original works and translations from the Greek and was mostly intended for use in the non- Greek churches and monasteries of Egypt.
Coptic is the Egyptian language written with Greek letters including some few additional signs not known in Greek. Coptic is strongly connected with Christianity in Egypt and was mainly used by Christians in the Byzantine Period and under Islamic rule. It was never used in civil administration. Most texts are religious.
