Situated on the west coast of the island, just south of the Kelani River, Colombo is a principal port on the Indian Ocean. It has one of the largest artificial harbors in the world. Its oldest districts are known as the Fort and the Pettah.

Colombo's geography is a mix of land and water. The city has many canals and, in the heart of the city, the 65-hectare (160-acre) Beira Lake. [25] The lake is one of the most distinctive landmarks of Colombo and was used for centuries by colonists to defend the city. [25]
