Luís IV (nascido Frederico Guilherme Luís Carlos, 12 de setembro de 1837 – 13 de março de 1892), foi o quarto grão-duque de Hesse, reinando desde o dia 13 de junho de 1877 [1] até sua morte. Através do seu casamento e dos seus filhos, estava ligado à família real britânica , à família imperial russa e outras casas reais europeias.

Louis IV Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, also called Grand Duke Ludwig IV was the oldest son of Prince Charles of Hesse and by Rhine (April 23, 1809 - March 20, 1877) and Princess Elizabeth of Prussia (June 18, 1815 - March 21, 1885). He ruled from June 13, 1877 until his death on March 13, 1892.
Ernest Louis was the elder son of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He was named Louis after his father. His nickname was "Ernie".
