Jackanory is a children's TV show that started in 1965 and features stories read by celebrities. The name comes from an 18th century rhyme, \"I'll tell you a story about Jack a Nory\".
Jackanory succeeded in persuading many reluctant readers to pick up a book. The success of spin-off Jackanory Playhouse encouraged the BBC to develop more children's dramas, such as Jonny Briggs.
