  1. 17 de jun. de 2020 · We used high-throughput single-cell RNA-seq to generate a cell atlas of the adult human retina. From 55,736 foveal and 29,246 peripheral retinal cells, we identified 58 cell types. We then used...

  2. Methods. Adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO) was used to image cones in 4 healthy subjects and 15 patients with IRD. The 840-nm scanning laser delivered an “E” optotype to measure AOSLO-mediated VA (AOSLO-VA).

  3. Layer of rods and cones (photoreceptor layer): This layer contains the outer segments of the photoreceptor cells—the rods and cones. Rods are the photoreceptor cells specialized for perceiving dim light, while cones are specialized for perceiving bright light and color.

  4. Cones are the predominant photoreceptor in the fovea and are connected to ganglion cells in a 1:1 ratio; Ganglion cells are concentrated outside of the central fovea, allowing more light to reach the central photoreceptors; Foveal photoreceptor axons form Henle’s layer run in an oblique fashion due to the peripheral concentration of ganglion ...

  6. The fovea is avascular and foveal cones are slender and densely packed relative to their peripheral counterparts. This creates a high metabolic burden, which may make the fovea vulnerable to degeneration [ 4 ]. The inner retina, containing the neurons that perform the initial stages of visual processing are also specialised in this region.

  7. 14 de abr. de 2021 · Examining the histopathology of AMD provides us with a better understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms that drive vision loss, which may ultimately aid in better determination of visual prognosis, patient counseling, and development of new treatments.
