Vilnius County (Lithuanian: Vilniaus apskritis) is the largest of the 10 counties of Lithuania, located in the east of the country around the city Vilnius and is also known as Capital Region or Sostinės regionas by the Lithuanian statistics department and Eurostat.

A cidade de Vilnius se localiza em (54°41′N 25°17′E / 54.683°N 25.283°E / 54.683; 25.283), na confluência dos rios, Vilnia e Neris. Acredita-se que o nome da cidade tenha sua origem do nome do rio que atravessa a capital do país, o rio Vilnia.
The counties are divided into 60 municipalities (Lithuanian: singular savivaldybė, plural savivaldybės ): 9 city municipalities, 43 district municipalities and 8 municipalities. Each municipality is then divided into elderates (Lithuanian: singular seniūnija, plural seniūnijos ).

The city of Vilnius, now the capital of Lithuania, and its surrounding region has been under various states. The Vilnius Region has been part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the Lithuanian state's founding in the late Middle Ages to its destruction in 1795, i.e. five centuries.
History. Lithuania began to turn into a country in the 7th – 9th centuries from Baltic nations group. The Balts, the ancestors of Lithuanians and Latvians, came to the area between Nemunas, Daugava rivers and the Baltic Sea, from a supposed original homeland of the Proto-Indo-European languages.
