Osceola and Renegade are the official symbols of the Florida State University Seminoles. Osceola, representing the historical Seminole leader Osceola , and his Appaloosa horse Renegade introduce home football games by riding to midfield with a burning spear and planting it in the turf.
Since 1978 the teams have been represented by the symbols Osceola and Renegade. The symbol represents an actual historical figure, Seminole war leader Osceola, whose clothing represents appropriate period dress.

For the 2017–2018 school year, the Florida State Athletics Department budgeted $103.2 million for its sports teams and facilities and currently brings in over $121.3 million in revenues. Florida State University is known for its competitive athletics in both men's and women's sports competitions.

The massive structure, including its granite-covered pedestal base, stands approximately 31 feet and depicts a spear-brandishing Seminole warrior colloquially referred to as Osceola, astride a rearing horse often called Renegade. At sunset the night before each home game, the spear is ignited and burns until sunrise the morning after the game.
