Mont-de-Marsan lies in the Petites Landes district, on the southeastern border of the vast Landes forest. It is an administrative centre and market town and has a bull ring, a racecourse, and several museums. Mont-de-Marsan was founded in 1141 by Pierre, Viscount de Marsan, as his capital.
