Michael Daniel Higgins (Irish: Mícheál Dónal Ó hUigínn; born 18 April 1941) is an Irish politician, poet, broadcaster and sociologist who has served as the ninth president of Ireland since 2011. Entering national politics through the Labour Party, he served as a senator from 1973 to 1977 having been nominated by the Taoiseach.

Michael Daniel Higgins (em irlandês: Micheál D. Ó Huigínn, Limerick, 18 de abril de 1941) é um político, poeta, escritor e radialista irlandês, atual presidente da Irlanda desde 2011. Estudou na Universidade de Galway (Irlanda), na Universidade de Manchester (Inglaterra) e na Universidade de Indiana (Estados Unidos).

The first president assumed office in 1938, and became recognised internationally as head of state in 1949 after the coming into effect of the Republic of Ireland Act . The current president is Michael D. Higgins, who was first elected on 29 October 2011, and inaugurated on 11 November 2011.
