Die Mission Mercury-Redstone 3 (MR-3) am 5. Mai 1961 gilt nach Juri Gagarins Flug Wostok 1 (12. April 1961) als der zweite bemannte Flug in der Geschichte der Raumfahrt. Alan B. Shepard war damit der erste US-Amerikaner oberhalb der als Grenze zum Weltraum anerkannten Kármán-Linie.
