Maximiliano foi o segundo filho de Eugênio de Beauharnais (filho adotivo de Napoleão I), 1.° duque de Leuchtenberg, e de sua esposa, a princesa Augusta da Baviera. Seus avós maternos foram o rei Maximiliano I José da Baviera e a princesa Augusta Guilhermina de Hesse-Darmstadt.
