Kansas (/ ˈ k æ n z ə s / ⓘ KAN-zəss) is a landlocked state in the Midwestern region of the United States. It borders Nebraska to the north; Missouri to the east; Oklahoma to the south; and Colorado to the west. Kansas is named after the Kansas River, in turn named after the Kansa people.

Kansas River. Located in northeast Kansas, the Kansas River is named for the Kansa or Kaw people who lived in the area. The name for the state of Kansas was chosen to honor the people and their river. It is slightly more than 60,000 square miles.

The Kansas River (locally known as the Kaw), formed by the junction of the Smoky Hill and Republican rivers at appropriately-named Junction City, joins the Missouri River at Kansas City, after a course of 170 mi (270 km) across the northeastern part of the state.
