In 1356, by the terms of the Golden Bull of Charles IV, the Margrave of Brandenburg was given the permanent right to participate in the election of the Holy Roman Emperor with the title of Elector (German: Kurfürst).
John George (born Sept. 11, 1525, Kölln an der Spree, Brandenburg—died Jan. 18, 1598, new style, Kölln an der Spree) was the elector of Brandenburg who in 1571 succeeded his father, Joachim II. Under his rule the divided electorate was reunited.
