Die Reichswehr trug zunächst nur ein schlichtes Schnallenschloss am Einheitskoppel, ab 1925 ein Kastenschloss nach altem preußischem Vorbild mit republikanischem Sechseckadler (statt Königskrone) und der Umschrift GOTT MIT UNS.
On the blades of the cross is the motto Gott mit uns. Between the arms were Prussian eagles along the edges and a royal crown in carré with them, all on a purple or red background. After the German Revolution of 1918–19, the Prussian state was slow to adapt its heraldry to republican forms.
It appears on Bundeswehr soldiers' belt buckles (replacing the earlier "Gott mit uns" ("God with Us") of the Imperial German Army and the Nazi-era Wehrmacht) and on 2 euro coins minted in Germany, and on the edges of the obsolete 2 and 5 Deutsche Mark coins.
