Boston Public Schools (BPS) operates schools throughout the city of Boston. BPS assigns students based on preferences of the applicants and priorities of students in various zones. Since 1989, the city has broken the district into three zones for elementary- and middle-school students.

Over the past twenty years, the Boston Public Schools (BPS) has been transformed from a failing school district to one of the most renowned urban public school systems in the country. We educate more than 54,000 students in 125 schools - 74 percent of the school-age children who live in Boston.
The first public schools in America were established by the Puritans in New England during the 17th century. Boston Latin School was founded in 1635. Boston Latin School was not funded by tax dollars in its early days, however.
