Edward Morgan Forster OM CH (1 January 1879 – 7 June 1970) was an English author, best known for his novels, particularly A Room with a View (1908), Howards End (1910) and A Passage to India (1924). He also wrote numerous short stories, essays, speeches and broadcasts, as well as a limited number of biographies and some pageant plays.

Edward Morgan Forster was born in London in 1879. His father died in 1880, but he and his mother were left affluent. He spent his early childhood near Stevenage in Hertfordshire, before the family moved to Kent so he could attend Tonbridge School. He was an academic success, and went up to King's College, Cambridge, in 1897.

Undergraduate. After a number of unhappy years in public schools, Forster came up to King's in 1897 to read Classics. His tutor, Nathaniel Wedd, was of some influence on the young Forster, encouraging him to become a writer and more generally being responsible, according to Forster, for "such awakening as has befallen me".
