He was born at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and was the son of a bookseller. He entered the Royal Academy Schools, and was a fellow-student of Holman Hunt, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. [1]

He was the seventh and final child of Robert Collinson, a bookseller, stationer, printer and sub-postmaster, and his wife Mary Harvey. Early in life James received art instruction from a Mrs. Ann Paulson, a local Mansfield artist. By 1846 James was living in London.
