Sir George Hayter (17 December 1792 – 18 January 1871) was an English painter, specialising in portraits and large works involving sometimes several hundred individual portraits. Queen Victoria appreciated his merits and appointed Hayter her Principal Painter in Ordinary and also awarded him a Knighthood in 1841.
Description. Before his appointment as Queen Victoria’s ‘Painter of History and Portrait’ in 1837, George Hayter had impressed the young Princess with his skill as a portraitist and helped her with her first attempts at oil painting. Hayter was to succeed Sir David Wilkie as Principal Painter in Ordinary to the Queen in 1841.

Son of miniaturist and teacher Charles Hayter (1761-1835); brother of portrait draughtsman John Hayter (1800-95).
Description. This painting captures the moment in the Coronation of Queen Victoria in Westminster Abbey when, after the Crowning, 'the people with loud and repeated shouts, will cry "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN": and immediately the Peers and Peeresses present will put on their Coronets' – in the Queen's words, 'a most beautiful and impressive moment'.
