Leonard Hilton McGurr (born November 17, 1955), known as Futura, and formerly known as Futura 2000, [1] is an American graffiti artist. [2] [3] [4] Biography. He started to paint illegally on New York City 's subway in the early 1970s, working with other artists such as ALI.
FUTURA2000 (born Leonard Hilton McGurr in New York City) is a graffiti pioneer who began painting subways in the late 1970s. In 1980 he painted the iconic whole car titled “Break,” which was recognized for its abstraction, rather than a focus on lettering.
Futura 2000, also known as Leonard McGurr, is a pioneer of abstract graffiti art. He collaborated with The Clash and exhibited with Basquiat and Haring in the 1980s.
