Jean-Léon Gérôme nasceu na cidade de Vesoul capital do departamento francês Haute-Saône. Transferiu-se para Paris em 1840, com apenas 16 anos, onde foi pupilo de Paul Delaroche a quem acompanhou em sua ida para a Itália, período de 1843 a 1844.
Jean-Léon Gérôme (French pronunciation: [ʒɑ̃ leɔ̃ ʒeʁom]; 11 May 1824 – 10 January 1904) was a French painter and sculptor in the style now known as academicism. His paintings were so widely reproduced that he was "arguably the world's most famous living artist by 1880."
Jean-Léon Gérôme (Vesoul, 11 de maio de 1824 - Paris, 10 de janeiro de 1904) foi um escultor e pintor academicista francês. Casou-se com Marie Goupil (1842–1912) a filha do negociador internacional de arte Adolphe Goupil, com quem teve quatro filhas e um filho.
