Jean François Gigoux (6 January 1806, Besançon – 11 December 1894, Paris) was a French painter, lithographer, illustrator and art collector.
Jean Gigoux, né Jean François Gigoux le 6 janvier 1806 à Besançon et mort à Paris le 11 décembre 1894, est un peintre, dessinateur, lithographe, illustrateur et collectionneur d'art français.
Jean Gigoux étudie à l'École des beaux-arts de Besançon, puis à l'École des beaux-arts de Paris en 1828. En 1833, il collabore au Magasin pittoresque. En 1835, il illustre de 850 gravures sur bois le Gil Blas de Lesage, ce qui lui vaut une grande notoriété.
Though described as “the most famous portrait painter of the age”, Gigoux is now best known for his relationship with Madame Balzac and the infamous rumour that they were in bed together, when the great novelist was dying in the next room along.
