Rupert Raleigh Hughes (January 31, 1872 – September 9, 1956) was an American novelist, film director, Oscar-nominated screenwriter, military officer, and music composer. He was the brother of Howard R. Hughes Sr. and uncle of billionaire Howard R. Hughes Jr.
Rupert Hughes, a versatile popular writer, was born in Lancaster, Missouri, on January 31, 1872. When he was seven years old his family moved to Keokuk, Iowa, where his father, Felix, practiced law and his mother, Jean, raised a brood of talented children.
Hughes was an American novelist, film director, Oscar-nominated screenwriter, military officer, and music composer.

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 9(AP)-- Rupert Hughes, well-known author-historian, died here today in the home of his brother, Felix, where he had made his home for six years. He was 84 years old.
