Robert Benchley was born on September 15, 1889, in Worcester, Massachusetts, the second son of Charles Henry Benchley and Maria Jane (Moran). [1] [2] They were of Welsh and Northern Irish (Protestant) ancestry, respectively, both from colonial stock. [3]
