Jonathan Bruce Postel (/ p ə ˈ s t ɛ l /; August 6, 1943 – October 16, 1998) was an American computer scientist who made many significant contributions to the development of the Internet, particularly with respect to standards.
For almost three decades, Jon Postel was RFC Editor, shepherding drafts through the open consensus processes that characterize Internet development efforts. For many, Jon’s greatest contribution to the Internet was his role in creating the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).
Editor of the RFC series from April 7, 1969 (its inception) until his untimely departure in Oct. 1998, covering over 2400 RFCs, and advocate of clean, conservative protocol design and specification. See RFC-2555 for more information. Co-author of over 204 Internet RFCs.
