Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (/ ˌ m oʊ p ər ˈ t w iː /; French: [mopɛʁtɥi]; 1698 – 27 July 1759) was a French mathematician, philosopher and man of letters. He became the Director of the Académie des Sciences, and the first President of the Prussian Academy of Science, at the invitation of Frederick the Great.

Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis was a French mathematician, biologist, and astronomer who helped popularize Newtonian mechanics. Maupertuis became a member of the Academy of Sciences in Paris in 1731 and soon became the foremost French proponent of the Newtonian theory of gravitation.
