Michael James Lighthill was born in Paris in 1924 and excelled across the board at Winchester before going up to Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1941 for a two-year wartime B.A. He worked on su-personic flight at the National Physical Labora-tory, Teddington, for the rest of the Second World War, publishing his first paper before he was twenty.
