He was the Duke of Trakai and governed the Grand Duchy of Lithuania , 1342–1382, together with his brother Algirdas (until 1377), and with his nephew Jogaila (until 1381).
Kęstutis was the grand duke of Lithuania (1381–82) who defended his country’s western borders against the Teutonic Knights. Kęstutis was one of the seven sons of Gediminas, the grand duke of Lithuania (reigned 1316–41), who had built that nation into a powerful east European empire.
