Gediminas (Latin: Gedeminne, Gedeminnus; c. 1275 – December 1341) was Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1315 or 1316 until his death in 1341. He is considered the founder of Lithuania's capital Vilnius (see: Iron Wolf legend). During his reign, he brought under his rule lands from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea.

Gediminas (born c. 1275—died 1341) was the grand duke of Lithuania, the strongest contemporary ruler of eastern Europe. Gediminas succeeded his brother Vytenis (Witen) in 1316 and started the Gediminian dynasty, which included his grandson Jagiełło, later Władysław II of Poland.

Gediminas’ Hill is an anthropogenically-modified slope of erosive origin, transformed into a fortified castle. Legend has it that Grand Duke Gediminas dreamt of a howling Iron Wolf on the hilltop, which he took as a prophecy of the great city that would one day stand in this place.
