  4. From 1515 Wolsey, as cardinal, lord chancellor, and papal legate, constantly overshadowed Warham. Under pressure he signed the petition requesting papal consent for a divorce. Described as ‘morose and inflexible’, he was nevertheless competent and conscientious.
