Zhang Wentian (30 August 1900 – 1 July 1976) was a Chinese politician who was a high-ranking leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Born in Nanhui, he attended the Hohai Civil Engineering School in Nanjing and spent a year at the University of California.

In spite of their collaboration, Zhang and Mao had some major ideological disagreements regarding the sinification of Marxism and Party history. Through the analysis of Zhang Wentian, this thesis is intended to help “rescue” CCP history from the Maoist narrative.
However, some of the Returned Students, especially Zhang Wentian, wanted to strike a balance between theory and practice. Although stressing theory as a guide to action, something which Mao had also done at the Gutian Conference in 1930, Zhang cautioned against excessively doctrinaire methods.
