Olivia Langdon (1845-1904), wife of Sam Clemens, was born to a wealthy, abolitionist family in Elmira, New York. She was considered to be frail in health - "It is likely that Clemens was informed early on by Mr. & Mrs. Langdon about the supreme delicacy of Olivia's health" (Trombley 95) .
