The contributions of Elias Avery Lowe (1879-1969) to the discipline of paleography are well known (2). His early monograph The Beneventan Script, together with its plates, published some fifteen years later as Scriptura Beneventana, is still regarded as the model for the study of a single script, in its origins, development, and decline (3).

The complete title of the work is Codices Latini Antiquiores: A Paleographical Guide to Latin Manuscripts Prior to the Ninth Century. Elias Avery Lowe founded the project in 1929 and directed it himself until his death in 1969.
