  1. Major-General John Charles Campbell, VC, DSO & Bar, MC (10 January 1894 – 26 February 1942), known as Jock Campbell, was a British Army officer and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

On 18 November 1941, with the opening of Operation Crusader, the British advanced across the Libyan border. 7th Armoured Brigade captured Sidi Rezegh and its airfield only twenty or so miles south-east of Tobruk, for which they were aiming. here they were attacked by the Germans on 20 November.

  4. John Charles Campbell died on the 26th of February 1942 aged 48 whilst Commanding 7th Armoured Division and is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery in Cairo, Egypt.

  5. 25 de fev. de 2024 · On the 21st November Brigadier Campbell was commanding the troops, including one regiment of tanks, in the area of Sidi Rezegh ridge and the aerodrome. His small force holding this important ground was repeatedly attacked by large numbers of tanks and infantry.

  6. John Charles ‘Jock’ Campbell was born in Thurso on 10 Jan 1894, one of 13 children. He worked as a bank clerk before WW1 and attended RMA Woolwich to be commissioned as a 2nd Lieut in the RA on 28 July 1915. He was wounded twice in 1916 and promoted on 10 Feb 1917 to lieutenant.
