Edward Cornwallis (5 March [O.S. 22 February] 1713 – 14 January 1776) was a British career military officer and member of the aristocratic Cornwallis family, who reached the rank of Lieutenant General.

The Hon. Edward Cornwallis, the sixth son of the fourth Baron, was a soldier and is known as "the founder of Halifax". His younger twin brother, the Right Reverend the Hon. Frederick Cornwallis , was Archbishop of Canterbury .
Born into a family with influential connections, Edward Cornwallis and his twin brother, Frederick, became royal pages at the age of 12. A captain in the 8th Foot by 1734, Cornwallis acted as a courier for the diplomatic service between 1738 and 1743 and became major of the 20th Foot in 1742.
Cornwallis vacated his seat on being appointed governor of Gibraltar. Only one speech by him in Parliament is recorded: on 29 Jan. 1762, in a confused debate on a technical point about the papers concerning the German musters.
23 de jan. de 2018 · A statue of Edward Cornwallis, the colonial founder of Halifax, was erected in the city’s downtown in 1931 as a celebration of British settlement. It later became an object of controversy in the midst of a growing public debate about Cornwallis’s treatment of the Mi’kmaq people.
