Neil Ritchie was a British general who led the Eighth Army in North Africa against Rommel's Afrika Korps. He was sacked after losing the Battle of Gazala and Tobruk in 1942.
Neil Ritchie was born in 1897. Educated at Lancing College and Sandhurst Military Academy he was commissioned into the Black Watch in 1914. In the First World War he fought in France and in Mesopotamia where he won the Military Cross in 1918.
Neil Ritchie was sacked as commander of Eighth Army in North Africa in 1942 after a disastrous defeat by Rommel. He later returned to field command in Normandy with the support of influential patrons and his own professional skills.
