John Rettie "Jock" McKernan Jr. (born May 20, 1948) is an American politician who served two terms as the 71st Governor of Maine, from 1987 to 1995. Born in Bangor, Maine, McKernan attended Dartmouth College and then the University of Maine School of Law.
McKernan is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges, a director of The American Action Forum and served as Governor of the State of Maine from 1987 to 1995.

25 de jan. de 1991 · Peter McKernan, the 20-year-old son of Gov. John R. McKernan Jr. of Maine, died Wednesday night, nine days after his heart stopped during varsity baseball practice at Dartmouth College.
McKernan was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1976 and 1984. Elected as a Republican to the Ninety-eighth and to the Ninety-ninth Congresses (January 3, 1983-January 3, 1987), he was not a candidate for reelection in 1986, but was elected Governor of Maine.
JOHN R. McKERNAN JR. was born in Bangor, Maine. In 1970, he received a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, where he was selected to the All-Ivy League Tennis Team. He joined the Army National Guard after graduation and then enrolled in the University of Maine Law School in 1971.
Former Maine Gov. John R. McKernan Jr. is senior adviser and past president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. As senior adviser, he counsels on a broad range of issues impacting the business community. McKernan also serves as chairman of the Foundation’s Center for Education and Workforce Advisory Board.
