Helen Hay Whitney, known as the “First Lady of the Turf,” campaigned 116 stakes winners, including greats such as Twenty Grand, Shut Out, Devil Diver and Jolly Roger. After graduating from Yale in 1926, John Hay Whitney, known as “Jock,” studied at Oxford in England until his father died in 1927.
Biography. John Hay Whitney was born August 17, 1904, the second child of Payne and Helen Hay Whitney. He was the namesake of his maternal grandfather John Hay, who served as secretary to President Lincoln and as Ambassador to Great Britain and Secretary of State under McKinley and Roosevelt.
