  3. Douglas Alexander Hamilton believed himself to be the true heir to the Scottish throne. The great British public of the time believed him to be the most arrogant man in existence. In recognition of his own importance, the Duke commissioned an imposing mausoleum for his final resting-place.

  4. Between 1822 and 1824, the Glasgow architect David Hamilton and Alexander, 10th duke designed the now iconic north front. It was heavily influenced by Adam’s earlier proposal, but with a larger portico it was much more intimidating.
