Synopsis. Battlestar Galactica is set in a distant star system, in an age described as "the seventh millennium of time". Twelve colonies of humans, living on different worlds, have been fighting a 1,000 year war against the robotic race of Cylons, who seek to exterminate all of humanity.

When the Cylon empire launches a successful and devestating attack on the Twelve Colonies of Man, the survivors are forced to flee their system in 220 ships, including the last surviving Battlestar, the Galactica, to find the one place that can offer a safe haven from their pursuers.

The 3-hour television movie with which the show premiered has always been known (unofficially) as Saga of a Star World, but this title nowhere appears on screen. The title credits describe the production only as Battlestar Galactica .
After the destruction of the Twelve Colonies of Mankind, the last major fighter carrier leads a makeshift fugitive fleet in a desperate search for the legendary planet Earth.
