Nazis are about to overrun France, and a Jewish man named Jacobowsky is stranded in Paris. He hitches a ride with reluctant Polish serviceman Colonel Prokoszny, who harbors a bias against Jews.
During the invasion of France by Nazi Germany, a shy, intelligent Jewish refugee tries to flee from the Nazis with the aid of an anti-Semitic, autocratic, brave Polish Colonel who is trying to smuggle papers to England.
